We need a materials section! :) (so we can share where and how much.. on the items/products we all use)

Anywho..

I have been getting all my 3mm baltic birch ply from Woodcraft previously.

(usually get in on group buys at my local makerspace when they order..etc)

but the prices have been going up and up.. and now they $2.00 a pop!

I searched around and gave this place on Amazon a shot:

KenCraft Hardwoods
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GQND2PK/

I got 40 sheets for roughly $1.375 ea.

not bad.. and shipped to my front door!

Review so far:

first look.. its 'lighter' in color from the pieces we get from Woodcraft.

(feels a bit lighter too? maybes its in my mind!?)

there are definitely some 'black marks' and 'knots' in them.. but so far with the exception of 1-2 pieces.. and least 1 side has been clean/perfect.

I have NOT tried to cut or etch anything in them yet.. so cant comment on the layers and/or glue to see if its an issue. (yet)

that is what the parts department is for. I may change it to read parts and supplies / suppliers

I Have been buying 1 or 2 60"x60" birch sheets here

http://www.woodworkerssource.com/shop/p ... pack3.html

getting the sheets cut into 12" x 30" pieces and doing final cuts myself based on need.

@Admin

ahh...

good to know.

I always thought of it as only for: 'parts for our lasers/machines'

ie: tubes, belts, lens, mirrors..etc.. (and not 'consumables', per se`)

thanks! I'll post more soon, still trying to find that 'right' acrylic deal still!

@dwyaneward

funny you should mention doing that. I just found out a place not too far from my house (maybe 5 miles or so) has 5ft. x 5ft sheets for $20.00

so roughly 25 sheets. (thats like .80 cents a sheet)

first cut is free I guess... and the remaining 15 cuts are 0.15-0.18 cents each (couple bucks tops)

I'll have to check it out.

FYI.. I just ran a test on the new wood. I feel its more or less the same as any other stuff I have used (mainly Woodcraft)

I've been buying the exact same thing for the last few years. Each order seems to be slightly different. Occasionally I'll get a sheet that doesnt want to cut, but I would say it is less than 5%.

My results show a difference in not only wood color.. but the engraving color/results.

The wood I get from Woodcraft has a more 'orange' look to it after being engraved.

Where as the 'new' wood from KenCraft has a more 'brown/darker' engraving results.

Its not a problem (per se`).. but its definitely a different look.

Now lets find some acrylic for the same prices!!!!! ;)

haha

p.s.

dbfletcher, I beat your drunk driving record! lol

I've got a Woodworkers Source not too far from me and bought some .25" Baltic Birch a few months ago. The cuts would have been more than the wood so I said I'd just cut it myself. When I drove around to the warehouse to pick it up the guy running the saw asked how I wanted it cut. I told him what I wanted and he went ahead and cut it for me, just asked that I not tell the people in the showroom. I'm wishing I'd done 1/8" in hindsight.

A couple days ago I was looking at the 1/8" 4x4 sheets at Home Depot. My son was wandering around and noticed a scrap wood pallet on the next isle had some almost full sheets of 1/8" birch. The cart had a 70% off sign, but when I found someone to ask about the price he said he couldn't mark 70% off a partial sheet and that it was free. He even cut the sheets down to 20x12's for me. Luck doesn't find me often but I was happy about this find. The HD 1/8" sheets I've been able to Vector Cut at Power 100 Speed 50. What everyone else getting? I notice it seems to smoke a little less than the wood I picked up at Wood Workers Source.

I found the hard wood Poplar sheets at Lowes were a little less than HD. I like the way they cut and burn, however they warp really easily even here in the dry desert.

If you ever need the 12x12 sheets, Michaels has a overpriced pack, but with their 40-50% coupons it's not that bad.

I was buying box after box from KenCraft, and just decided to say screw it and go to a local lumber yard. After getting lied to on an order there (5x5 sheets) I found out who theirr supplier is, and its a local contractor supply yard.

Bring them home, cut them up, pay around $11 for a 5'x5' sheet of 3mm, and a bit more for 6mm.

Oh, and that home depot stuff is usually garbage with a sawdust fill. I use it for a few things here and there, but mostly scrap projects where I dont need any kind of finish quality or edge quality. The full solid core stuff is what you want.
