Is it possible to import/print raster objects into RE from illustrator? When I go to print, even with different fill colors everything turns black in RE, and no option to select the different components to give them different settings for detailed engravings. I'm sure I'm missing something basic here.

On a side note: I've heard some people have had success printing direct from Illustrator to RE and not having double lines for vector cuts, but I swear I've tried everything and still can't get it to work (Stroke from anywhere between 0.5 to 0.00001; stroke set to outside/inside; no fill - of course; file set to RGB - yes). Anyone have a successful file I could look at? Even if a plain square would be helpful. I know you can import to inkscape, but that's another 5-10 minutes of importing/re-scaling/changing around computers that takes away from production time.

In the raster engrave tab, the only way to change the settings is to do a simple or half tone dither. Otherwise, the power and speed you set is what you get. We have done it where we turn off layers in illustrator, print that to RE, then we can do a halftone dither on that and engrave it (make sure your vector outline is still turned on so everything still lines up).

To get a vector, we've had luck with just 0.25 stroke, and having 'ignore thin vector' checked and 'tolerance = 0.25'.

Alrighty, in the attached .zip, there's an .ai file (from CS5). I printed directly to RE, or you should be able to open the .set file.

The raster engrave tab should have both lines of text.
The vector tab will have the green outline, and a red outline of the second line of text.

For some reason I haven't quite figured out yet, some lines just won't print from illustrator and play nice in RE, so we have to save it as a PDF, then print to RE from the pdf.

Make sure you're using the RGB color set, not CYMK. Using CYMK will make everything turn black or purple or something.

Corel Draw defaults to CYMK so I'm guessing that's what you're seeing in Illustrator.

I use AI.

I'll have to check what 'checkboxes' I have ticked in my RE software.. (might be ignore small vector or something similar/close)..

for strokes (cut lines) I use (RGB) and 0.001px for stroke thickness.. and higher and I get the double/ghost cuts..etc..

from my experience, any/all FILLS sent form AI to RE.. will come over at raster data. (regardless of color, fill = engrave)

You would have to send your data (layers?) in multiple steps if you wanted say 'RED' (which comes over as black anyways) to be engraved at say: 100% power / 50% speed

then hide/show another layer/color... send this to RE (again comes over as black).. to set a different power/speed setting for that 'fill'...

you could do a grey scale and have it 'respect' the lighter/darker areas and adjust its power/speed off the picture... (but I have walked down that road)..

From what "I" know.. you do not get 'colors' for raster/engrave data.. colors (and hence specific power/speed control) only applies to vector data.

If I am in-correct, please let me know.

:)

@hoozie Thank you! The .25 stroke + ignore thin vector + tolerance = .25 worked! I remember trying something similar to this, but I never tried the tolerance option. I'll keep the pdf trick in mind!

@xl97 Darn, seems strange that we don't get those 'colors' options for engraving like we do with vectors. Would make things easier to work with for the rotary attachment at least without having to worry if the item slips 1/16 inch, and then the whole item is ruined (trying to design some rolling pins with different levels of engraving for detail). Maybe I'll try the greyscale, though that doesn't seem like you have as much control.

Here's to hoping these little things get added to the new RE software coming out! And that it works with the non-Muse machines!

Try to play around with the 3d tab..
